The Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting the development and execution of communications activities for Second Harvest, with an emphasis on writing.  This position ensures consistency of message and brand in all communication deliverables while following established policies, procedures, and guidelines. We are looking for a polished and passionate communicator, who is savvy with established and emerging digital content platforms and can craft engaging content that will expand the reach and awareness of the Second Harvest brand.

You Will:

  • Participate in the planning, development, and implementation of communications strategies, in collaboration with Marketing & Communications department.
  • Provide communications support by planning, drafting, and delivering engaging communications pieces (newsletters, presentations, proposal decks and reports, etc.). 
  • Support senior staff with day-to-day internal and external communications. 
  • Research and gather relevant content to respond to media inquiries.
  • Write and create powerful digital communications to engage our audiences (select social posts, blogs, emails, etc.).
  • Maintain unified and authentic brand voice across different channels; ensure guidelines and standards are adhered to creating and editing communication content.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to ensure communication needs and brand goals are being met. 
  • Work with subject matter experts across the organization to develop relevant SEO content.
  • Support communication deliverables for events.
  • Contribute to annual communications calendar planning and maintenance.
  • Contribute to knowledge management structures; maintain accuracy of visual resources (video and photography.
  • Identify opportunities to strategically channel communication plan in order to best leverage news items and stories; stay up to date with latest communication best practices, technologies, and trends. 
  • Responds to inquiries from individuals, journalists, and other organizations, as required.
  • Gathers information and data to support spokespeople in media interviews.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization.

You Are:

  • Communicator: you are a strong communicator (both written and verbal). You have strong copywriting and copy-editing skills. You can create, curate, and deliver thought-provoking content across multiple channels.
  • Creative Thinker: You enjoy identifying innovative ways to reach your audience and are not afraid to express your ideas in a team setting.
  • Team Player: you have a positive, collaborative working style and approach any tensions that arise with diplomacy.
  • Organized: you have excellent project and time management skills, coupled with the ability to multitask.
  • A Continuous Learner: constant change motivates you to adapt and grow.
  • Detail-Oriented: you are proud of your work and know that cutting corners isn’t an option.
  • Demonstrated communications success, preferably in non-profit or journalism sectors.
  • Knowledge and skill in design programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is an asset.
  • Bilingualism would be considered a strong asset.
